THE DUCHESS

Based on a true story of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, you can't help but pity the Duchess for the situation she is thrown into. Her role as the Duchess is to produce a male heir to the Duke (played by Ralph Fiennes). This is perhaps the only movie role that Ralph Fiennes acted that you love to hate. He acted as an emotionally disabled Duke who rape his wife to produce a male heir after many failed attempts. He even had adultery with other women right under her nose. Caught between a romantic love affair with Charles Grey (the future Prime Minister) and her children, the Duchess has to make a difficult choice in life. It set you thinking what would you do if you were in her place. I guess a lot of our older folks out there are in the same situation as the Duchess. Often, children comes first before self. But, society has changed in the recent years and this scenario hardly exist anymore. I believe that if the woman's charter were to have existed back then, it would have make the situation/ending very different.
